Why Means of Participation are so important, a tiny 🧵 First what are Means of Participation? They are intentionally installed routines for the common ways students will be expected to answer questions in class. Usually: Cold Call, Turn & Talk, Stop & Jot (Everybody

Two simple rules: 1. You get better at what you practice. 2. Everything is practice. Look around and you may be surprised by what people are “practicing" each day. If you consider each moment a repetition, what are most people training for all day long? Many people are

Once you’ve secured attention, a logical step is to focus on quality and ratio of thinking. Explicit instruction is better for this than inquiry because it briskly alternates between providing minimal statements to think about and questions to drive thought.

New ‘Why do we need teachers when we have Google?’ variant spotted in the wild. We don’t teach kids about grammar and mitochondria and trig because we’re hedging our bets they want to become poets, biologists or coders; we teach them a foundation of human knowledge so they can

One of the main problems in what I see of teachers' use of the Noun Project is the inconsistent graphic features of the icons chosen. To be the most coherent, they ought to have the same line width. And look at what The Noun Project has just announced!

'How Teaching & Learning Happens' course provides a shared understanding of how learning happens based on cognitive science, at a teacher's own pace, for an affordable price. This ongoing, cumulative and sustainable PD is a game changer. DM Carl Hendrick or I to find out more.

I think the one thing I'd want *good* teachers to know is that: You can deliver the best explanations, checks for understanding, feedback and independent practice in the world. BUT If you don't have a plan for long term memory, retrieval and repetitions...it's all for nought.

Katharine Birbalsingh I’d also say, Michaela kids taught to be hardworking, nicer to each other, honest, sense of personal responsibility, to express their ideas articulately & politely, to listen to one another, to manage their time, patience with others, consideration, positivity.

This sums up wasted time in so many lessons. We should know what we REALLY want pupils to remember in this lesson. We should know the high frequency errors pupils make. Tell them!!!’This bit is really important! This is the bit people in other schools get wrong!’

To get coaching to work at scale, the *baseline requirements* are huge: Brilliant observation skills Shared model of good T&L De-esacalted accountability Knowledge of psychology and motivation Humility and willingness to receive feedback And that's just the start!
