Hundreds of ⁦University of Sussex⁩ staff and students targeted ⁦Kathleen Stock⁩ in a campaign of bullying and harassment We all saw the letters signed by academics, the slanderous posters and student flash mobs They can’t rewrite history We saw what they did apple.news/AnBblFEEqRimTQ…

This is good to hear, although it'll be a shame if all the Secretary of State is referring to is the newly defanged Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act, which the government wanted to repeal before it was even commenced (until howls of outrage made them row back slightly)

Me in Times Higher Education on the academic freedom fine against University of Sussex. Even if the Uni wins its case against The Office for Students (OfS), workplace trans inclusion policies based on Advance HE and Stonewall materials are still likely to breach the Equality Act timeshighereducation.com/opinion/many-u…

🚨ACTION🚨 We plan to send this open letter asking ministers and UKRI to rethink their plans for REF2029 early next week. Any UK academic can sign. The REF is important because it allocates £2 billion a year in research funding. Current proposals pose serious risks 🧵

The sector-wide failure to protect the academic freedom of gender critical academics and students has been documented in the Sullivan Review. (Including two dishonourable mentions of the Gender Studies department LSE.)

Excellent short piece by ⁦Abhishek Saha⁩ on how the OfS Guidance on freedom of expression precludes universities requiring ideological conformity from their staff, and why embracing this requirement is essential if universities are to thrive. thecritic.co.uk/will-universit…

The Wilkins case should be read by various employers with internal blogs published on the employer site, and those with certain active staff networks. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/687e55f1…

For example, allowing a staff network to publish stuff on an employers' website suggesting people are bigots for holding views that represent judicial decisions contributes to a hostile environment and maybe should be discouraged. Not looking at any employers in particular.

🧵1/ King's College London (KCL) King's College London currently has a job advert for Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Music History that, in my opinion, does not comply with the university's legal duty to secure freedom of speech and academic freedom.
