Increasingly feel being aware of nature is a curse as well as a blessing. The rest of our lives will be spent wondering if this is the year it all finally falls apart, which species is going to be next. Permanent anxiety.

Watched this Golden Eagle hunt, catch (didn’t see this bit, it was over the brow of the hill) and eat a rabbit today. Will never tire of seeing these birds.

To dandelions everywhere, I want to issue a very public apology for missing yesterday. I’m SO sorry! This is not a reflection of my feelings for you. I love you dearly & continue to sing your praises. Forgive me.

Wildflowers, not weeds 🌼💛

Our dedicated entomology volunteer, Dorothy Lyle, has been running the light traps again with Ashleigh Whiffin on the grounds of the collection centre. 💡

It’s been a slow start, but has included a new record for the site - Powdered Quaker.

There is a great irony that I am confronted with often in my work Natural History Museum : 1. we are in a biodiversity crisis, awareness of the decline in biodiversity is rising, engagement with nature is very high through apps, websites, entertainment, even a GCSE in Natural History..

NIST researcher Eric Mueller joined Northern Research for the work shown in this video! Their goal is to improve the use of prescribed fires - intentional wildland fires designed to manage the ecosystem - by looking at how embers spread these fires. Check out the video for more details!

Every year we collect strandings from all over our coastline, to help monitor changes in our sea life 🐋

It is devastating to see the impact plastic is having. This collection of bags were ingested by a Cuvier's beaked whale causing it to starve to death.
