Unless the idea is to raise a generation of Dickensian street urchins we might want to consider actually having a system where people can afford a place to live first. Just a thought.

Conservatives went from 'people saying things some ppl find offensive on uni campuses is the essence of freedom and must be protected' to 'people saying things some ppl find offensive on uni campuses is LITERALLY LIKE HITLER and must be violently suppressed' pretty quickly hey

One part of our task today is to work, with everything we’ve got, to spread, maintain and build the Palestine solidarity encampments. Another task is to fight for clarity, and out of that to build hope. redflag.org.au/article/six-le…

If possible please be at camp 5PM Monday. They are expecting to face a large counter-protest, as Monash Uni is hosting an IDF memorial event with former IDF soldiers as security guards. Camp will likely face counter protest, so we ask people to come down to peacefully defend it.

The likely impact of Labor's budget on the cost of living crisis is summed up by the fact they're spruiking a 10% increase in Rent Assistance at a time when rents went up, on average, by 11.5% in 2023 (13% in capital cities). A cut, in real terms, is not a win for renters.

State Labor gov. summed up: "key lobby groups Property Council Australia [big landholders and builders] and the Urban Development Institute of Australia [big developers] were prominent in the diaries of multiple ministers". Renters? Public housing tenants? Homelessness orgs? GTFO

Congratulations to Fatima Payman for having the courage to take a principled stand and stay strong despite the abuse she's been subject to. We need more people in parliament who are prepared to put personal advancement and power aside and take a stand on issues that matter.

Local council elections are coming up this October. Over the next few weeks, we'll be introducing some of the more than 70 Victorian Socialists candidates who are running in councils across the state. Today we introduce Merri-bek, Bulleke-bek Ward candidate Louisa Bassini. 🧵

And it's not just housing either. Hundreds of millions go hungry under capitalism at the same time as around a third of all food produced is wasted. We're taught to believe it's an efficient system but in reality it's a complete disaster for all but the wealthiest few.

We see construction workers' contribution to society every day in things like the new Sydney Metro. They deserve every (hard won) penny they get. The overpaid windbags in parliament who are leading the charge against their union - not so much. Solidarity with CFMEU members. ✊

Another nail in the coffin for the 'construction worker wages cause high housing costs' argument. It's the construction industry bosses, big developers, and banks that are profiting most from the housing crisis, not the people doing the hard work of actually building houses.

Victorian Socialists members were there when workers marched in their tens of thousands to 'change the rules' back in 2018-2019. We'll be there again at the State Library this Tuesday 11am marching alongside CFMEU members and others fighting to defend our union movement. ✊

The view from Trades Hall right now. A wonderful sight - tens of thousands of construction workers out to defend their hard won union rights! ✊
