Seeing so many writers - whose job + responsibility centers on language and its nuances - use the word “genocide” not as a means of clarity for what’s happening in Gaza but to prove they belong to an ideological club has been a very small thing in all this. But it does depress.

Last thought on Guernica: there’s such a vast divide between people in the comfortable West who believe “War is bad” is the beginning of the conversation and those who believe it’s the end of it. Good writing can bridge that divide. But it requires serious, good-faith readers.
