I met with Sanaa and Enrique, Illinois student ambassadors of @DtWTChallenge, yesterday during their annual visit to DC. The Do The Write Thing Challenge is a great national initiative aimed to prevent youth violence through classroom discussions and writing.

Not in this column is that I spoke to these kids. I told them about Blanca, my 8th grade classmate who was killed. I told them to own their stories. Then I left feeling mad that kids from neglected zip codes are still going through what my classmates and I did 20-plus years ago.
