A southeastern native, semi-evergreen, shade-tolerant vine with fragrant flowers that pollinators love? Yes, please! This is climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea (aka Decumaria) barbara), which grows from Virginia down to Florida and west to Louisiana in moist, bottomland forests.

You've probably heard of the devastating blight that wiped out the American chestnut, once a dominant tree in eastern U.S. forests. But did you know we have another native chestnut in North Carolina, a smaller species that has proved relatively resistant to the fungus?

It’s called Allegheny chinquapin or dwarf chestnut (Castanea pumila), and this is it in bloom! It grows in dry, upland forests in the southeastern U.S. Like its larger cousin, it produces sweet, edible nuts that can be eaten raw, baked, or ground into flour.
