We are saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Elizabeth Bernays, entomologist who mentored and inspired us both in our work on insect feeding behaviour and nutrition – from London to Tucson. Thank you, Liz, you will be greatly missed.

We previously made the point that reduction and synthesis are complementary strategies in nutrition science (Ann. Rev. Nutrition 2016 36:603-26). It’s been a pleasure working with Jonathan Sholl to apply tools of philosophy and examine this in more detail.
