It’s simple. Either we build places around people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving, or we build places around only driving. The former creates strong, financially productive neighborhoods. The latter creates fragile, unproductive neighborhoods. The choice is ours.

If the measure of intelligence is the ability to change, then the true “smart cities” are the ones transitioning from car-obligatory to car-optional. Cities like Rotterdam, where over the past two decades, they’ve made getting from A to B not just easy, but thoroughly enjoyable.
