Forget internet, in 1980 you could get the '#Sunderland & Washington Times' delivered free through letterbox on Thursday evenings. #SAFC promotion special, & later, regular Ken Knighton column (often featuring his stock preview forecast: "It's going to be a helluva [sic] game")!

May 1982: This very week's edition of 'Match Weekly' #football magazine. Doesn't get any better than this vintage [1981-84]. There's some past-&-future #SAFC connections in this mini selection, with Dave Watson, Eric Gates, & Frank Worthington. Our May 1982 Cup Runneth Over.

#OTD 1983:WBA scorer Garry Thompson sees Gordon Chisholm meet Atkins free-kick & power home equalising header at Fulwell End. The draw was final WBA game for former #SAFC apprentice John Wile (who Durban had tried to bring back as his assisitant in December).[#GiveUsTomorrowNow]

#OTD 1983: Action from 1-1 v WBA at Roker. Sadly, it proved final 1st-class #SAFC match for both Ally McCoist & 2nd-half sub Frank Worthington. But, the two strikers did 'partner' each other again, being room-mates on club's post-season break in Magaluf. [see #GiveUsTomorrowNow]

Durban’s team went into last game safe; we could relax and let the relegation drama be played out at Maine Road between Manchester City and Luton Town.

Chisholm’s downward header beats WBA keeper Paul Barron, and the Fulwell End net bulged in the most resplendently satisfying manner. Sunderland were level. (Mmmm. Nice).

#OTD 1982: Roker Victory to 'Miracle' Escape. Achieved with last-day 1-0 win v Manchester City. '[14th min] Pickering broke on left, shot blocked; regained position; allowing West to tee up Buckley whose low drive from 12 yds gave #SAFC precious breakthrough'.[#GiveUsTomorrowNow]

#GiveUsTomorrowNow #Sunderland #SAFC #80sfootball #footballbooks The three seasons Alan Durban managed on Wearside included 'the' original (and best) 'miracle' escape. Golden Football Days all round. Never to be forgotten.

'Winner Takes All'! "We've now got to keep our best players & add to it to win anything. Things will get better with a younger side, as some of them have been learning the game". But, Durban wished he had more financial resources at his disposal too! [#GiveUsTomorrowNow] #SAFC

Arthur Cox a regular caller to his former Roker patch in the 81-83 period, making attempts to take five of Durban’s #SAFC squad to Newcastle (either on loan or permanently). Was successful in recruiting Clarke and forward Alan Brown (full story in #GiveUsTomorrowNow).
