Since Dan Andrews @MartinFoleyMP listen to mathematicians & not doctors, perhaps they can explain how health systems around the world managed to deliver elective surgery during Omicron, but Victorian Department of Health could not? Govt should facilitate, not drive panic! Stark contrast below!

Great to see hospital COVID admission numbers in VIC <600. Hoping to now hear (or discuss) a roadmap for resumption of elective surgery. 130 consecutive days of elective surgery restrictions in Victoria, a long term plan is required. #SpringSt

Never thought as a neurosurgeon I would have to beg hospitals to operate on patients with severe pain who can’t walk. This is the new normal unfortunately.

Surgeons are highlighting what they call a cruel waste of resources under Victoria's elective surgery ban. They say hospital beds are available to treat patients in pain, but the rules prevent overnight stays. youtu.be/u9xoSNPHe_A Emma O'Sullivan #7NEWS

From me today: Victorian surgeons say private hospital wards and operating theatres are empty and dozens of staff are sitting idle while elective surgery remains banned. Private hospitals say they can do more, but aren't allowed. Tune into AM on ABC Radio. #springst #covidvic

Paying surgeons & anaesthetists not to work in the public. Paying private hospitals not to work keeping them empty. Paying for medihotels with no patients. Could we be burning any more taxpayers money in Victoria for any less hospital output?

9 out of 10 patients I see don’t need surgery. Strangely enough most of my days are spent explaining to people why they don’t need surgery. Some cry with happiness, some cry with sadness. Some thank me for my honesty. Some abuse me. Operating is the easy part. Bring it on Tuesday

The public hospitals have been stretched for decades It’s only due to a strong private system that public hospitals haven’t been crushed. Covid exposed how brittle the public system is. Time to get private cranking again and look at long term solutions for public #COVID19Vic

Hospitals are already looking to save money again thanks to covid. I hope administrators can find some new strategies to save money that don’t just involve not paying nurses and junior doctors for work they’ve done, for overtime and oncall. There is not much goodwill left.

Interesting to hear @MartinFoleyMP not giving an inch on the broad brush Govt elective surgery restrictions that prevented private facilities using their capacity to perform essential surgery. Claims that Govt worked with RACSurgeons & AMA Victoria on this are interesting.

I forgot how hard operating can be 😬… The lack of operating time for trainees and surgeons is not good for anyone. Way easier when you are in the groove.

Loving my long bike ride today but struggling to rationalise how badly one of my brain tumour patients was treated this week by a dysfunctional healthcare system. Hospitals seem to have stopped caring about anything that’s not covid. In fact they gave him covid. 👎🤕😥

Our healthcare system is so broken. So many children, adults and elderly with treatable medical, surgical and psychiatric conditions are falling through the cracks. Denying standard treatments has been normalised. We should do better in Australia.

Private hospitals were brought under a public banner under emergency orders, asked nurses without PPE to take care of COVID positive patients, to kill themselves undertaking extra work - and now nurses in private hospitals aren’t getting the HCW bonus payments?

A groundbreaking new robot is helping change the lives of Victorians in desperate need of back surgery. It can pinpoint exactly where a device needs to be placed, getting patients back on their feet faster. 7NEWS.com.au Emma O'Sullivan #7NEWS
