Something I've felt for a while and became acutely aware of this semester: most of our courses are built from the ground up on assumptions about skills students have...except now they don't have them. The whole teaching experience feels like two-way gaslighting.

It's early days, but in the first week of my sabbatical my only accomplishment has been making daily trips to the grocery store.

Somehow I'd never seen Strangers on a Train before today. Now that I have: 1) I'm never going on a merry-go-round again 2) Farley Granger is my number one classic Hollywood crush

my second major in philosophy has been my secret weapon in my career, it gave me a toolbox of critical thinking, reasoning, and ethical skills that are applicable across so many fields and in so many situations

Yeah, but where would we find any examples of how that's worked, like, EVER? (ps sorry to be that guy because my book doesn't explain, like, the whole world and everything else, but publication date set for May 12, 2026, which is fun and exciting)

I just worked up the courage to read a draft of a chapter I haven't touched in 18 months, and....it's much better than I remembered.

Does anybody else who frequently uses a tablet have the problem that when you use a laptop you poke at the screen with increasing fury wondering why it won't respond?

Really good get for the Iowa Dems. A ticket led by Scholten for Senate and Rob Sand for Governor could really help rebuild the party after the last few cycles of general bleh

New from me in @MiddleWestReview: some material from my current book project about the time religious progressives gained a real foothold in the rural Midwest with a vision for a radically transformed (and vastly more just) society. muse.jhu.edu/article/961045

I've finally figured out my issue with Bluesky: it's a bubble of like-minded people, but more specifically it's like-minded people who seem to forget at least half the country mostly agrees with them. So it has very weird vibes of the walls closing in.

I'm seeing lots of Democrats dooming about the current structural GOP bias in the Senate. I wish folks would have a little more political imagination. States evolve. Coalitions evolve. The GOP didn't get its permanent majority in 2004 and won't now.

you might have to go all the way back to 1934 and the first two years of the New Deal to find an instance where a majority party was rewarded for signature legislation/governance. Just a reality check as Rs try to sell/defend OBBB (which is already unpopular)

Curtis is a small town of 900 people in rural southwest Nebraska. The Curtis Medical Center announced yesterday it is closing, after more than 30 years. It is the only health care provider in the community. They blame Trump’s Medicaid cuts. klkntv.com/rural-southwes…
