Happy birthday to William Beebe, born July 29, 1877! Beebe was a naturalist whose specialty was documenting live creatures in their natural habitats, including shallow reefs and the deep sea. He and Otis Barton descended to a record-setting 3028 feet in 1934. #diving #history

Today marks the 59th anniversary of the lowering of the Florida Keys' iconic Christ of the Deep statue! On August 25th, 1965, the statue was placed in 25 feet of water off the coast of Key Largo. It remains a popular dive and snorkel destination. #diving #history #FLKeys

Today marks the 51st anniversary of the discovery of the USS Monitor, a Civil War wreck that lies 16 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. On August 27th, 1973, 111 years after its sinking, the wreck of the USS Monitor was detected in 230 feet of water.

Happy birthday to Sylvia Earle! Born August 30th, 1935. 89 today, Sylvia is a world-class explorer, oceanographer and author who has dedicated her life to the conservation of our world's oceans. #diving #history

Today marks the 39th anniversary of the discovery of the Titanic, whose wreck was found on September 1st, 1985. The hull of the ship was located using cues from the debris field, such as its boiler, which was the first piece of the Titanic photographed. #diving #history #Titanic

Today marks the anniversary of one of the very first acts of submarine warfare. The attack on the HMS Eagle by Bushnell's Turtle occurred on September 6th, 1776. Despite the attack's failure, the Turtle was an early milestone in the history of submersibles. #diving #history
