Today marks the 112th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

Striking an iceberg just before midnight on April 14th, 1912, she would sink to the seafloor in the early morning hours of April 15th. It would be 73 years before human eyes would see her again.

For St. Patrick's day, let’s dive into some Irish diving history!

The SS Laurentic was built in Belfast, Ireland and was sunk off the coast of the country by two German mines during WWI. Her salvaging was the largest retrieval of sunken gold in the history of diving.

This day in history marks the first successful act of submarine warfare, wherein a vessel was sunk by the attacking party.

On February 17th, 1864, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley attacked the USS Housatonic. Both vessels would sink in the aftermath.

Happy Valentine’s Day from HDM!

While it may look romantic, this photo is of two divers preparing to explore the wreck of the Lusitania, which was sunk by a German U-boat in May of 1915. The left diver wears the Tritonia atmospheric diving suit.

Did you know? Today would have been Lloyd Bridges’ 111th birthday. Born January 15th, 1913, he starred in numerous movies throughout the 40s and 50s, but here at the museum, we remember him most for his role as Mike Nelson on Sea Hunt. Happy Birthday Lloyd!

Yesterday we welcomed the Beebe family to the Museum. The Beebes, from Virginia, are related to William Beebe. He was their great grandfather's cousin.

Beebe was a ground-breaking naturalist, marine biologist, and explorer. We were thrilled to have his relatives as visitors!

On this day 66 years ago, the first episode of Sea Hunt aired on television.
