We are hiring for 3 positions! Emphasis on security (+ few other areas). What keeps me here + why you should come: 1) 1-1 teaching load for life, small classes 2) low student costs 3) *very* competitive salary+startup 4) growing dept DM for details (esp. security folks).

Many russians even educated ones prefer to be in denial on what's happening in Ukraine. Of course there's a massive propaganda and censorship campaign. But finding alternative information is the matter of basic digital literacy. This is more about denial as self-coping mechanism

Tomorrow at the Microarchitecture Attacks and Defenses (MAD) tutorial at ISCA I'll talk about Microarchitectural Weird Machines — how we can use microarchitecture to perform/hide computations. Stop by if interested! iscaconf.org/isca2022/progr…

🎉 I'm happy to announce that I received the NSF CAREER award to study weirdness in microarchitecture and hopefully making future CPUs more secure. That's a great honor. Thank you U.S. National Science Foundation.

Website: your password must contain digits, lower and upper case, 4 unique special characters, be 10+ long 😤. Same website: anyone who can find out city you were born in can recover your password 🙃

What happens first: google's AI gains consciousness or learns how to filter emails like this one (with virus-filled PDF of course) as spam?

Chip card terminals be like: processing PROCESSING Do Not Remove Your Card Still processing pRoCEsSInG dO nOT ReMOve YOUr cARd hodl on ... one more prOcESSIng to go ... Really annoying. Seriously why all that screen changes if nothing really happens?

This what Google assistant shows when asked for "cellular automaton". Why there is meat? Why caption says "gyro"? Interesting that it works like that only from lock screen.

People talk about devices spying on them. You say something out loud and 5 minutes later you get a targeted ad. Apparently AI fails on me. I get same ads over and over again about products that I already own or will never buy

It's really amazing what ChatGPT and other recent AI systems can do but this 👇 shows current approaches are not really scalable due to power and hardware costs. It means we urgently need innovation both in AI algorithms and hardware architectures

Programming in Rust may feel like all you do is fixing compile time errors one-by-one. It's painful. But that's the price of security I guess. Wondering if #copilot and such can make it more bearable and enjoyable by giving you right templates and fixing errors before compilation

I guess the next step would be to come up with paraphrasing engine that with 99% success rate removes watermark while preserving the meaning

Everybody knows proprietary crypto is terrible idea but why most people are ok with closed-source password managers with 0 transparency. How do you know the app isn't simply sending your master password somewhere? IMO that's not ok
