Powerful new re-imaginings of Quamina, 52, Jack, 28, & Amba, 26. For two centuries, all we had were Joshua Bryant’s toxic images of insurgents defeated, hanged, decapitated. But in recent years, Quamina & his compatriots have re-emerged in sympathetic portrayals by Black artists.

Important article on a story some would rather forget. It concerns the research of @MalikAndTheOGs on a company that ‘monopolised much of the Demerara sugar trade during the late 18th Century and the 19th Century.’

In early September 1823, Quamina and Jack were still eluding the authorities. The colonial newspapers advertised a reward of 1000 guilders for their capture.

OTD 1823. Jack Gladstone has been captured, but the hunt for his father, Quamina, is still going on. His encampment has been discovered in the Bush, with four huts, corn and rice, and muskets, powder and shot. But also a small library. (See J. Bryant, Account of an Insurrection).

The letter shown here, dated late November 1823, notes that the trial of the missionary, John Smith, is closed but the result not known. Smith’s trial lasted from 13 October to 24 November. Enslaved members of his chapel were called as prosecution witnesses.
