Our conclusion is that IL-1b is a key axis that Salmonella uses to trick the host into helping establish colonization. Also, colonization levels in the gut do not correlate with mortality in mice. Most importantly, this taught us to not measure an outcome we don’t understand./19

Had a great time attending BIC2023 at UC Berkeley Was super fun getting to present some of our skin #microbiome work as a flash talk to an audience of #bioengineers working on many different topics! Happy to have secured the Best Rapid Talk award as well!😁🦠 #BIC2023

The only reason to care about #DaylightSavingTime is when you started a growth curve assay before the change, so now you need to remember to add that note about the change when taking the next time point to get the right growth rates. 🦠⏱️ #Microbiology

Our paper is out today in nature! Imagine getting this plot when studying single-cell data of growing bacteria! Could it be the cell cycle?! We found that a gene’s response to its replication reveals gene regulation on a genomic scale. nature.com/articles/s4158… Andrew Pountain

In our new paper at Cell (Cell), we reveal secrets of how the third form of life, archaea, make energy. We uncover new lineages of hydrogen-using enzymes, both minimal and complex. These help archaea thrive in all sorts of extreme environments. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Our latest preprint is out! This paper led by Sukhwan Yoon uncovers a new process controlling the global hydrogen and nitrogen cycles, i.e. the direct coupling of hydrogen oxidation and ammonification. A beautiful combination of isolation, bioreactor, and systems biology studies.

The outer ear is a mammalian innovation but where did it come from? In our study in nature, Mathi Thiruppathy and colleagues find that the outer ear arose from modification of an ancestral gill program first originating in marine invertebrates. nature.com/articles/s4158… 1/n
