Assisted dying bill is safer than any other in the world: “I am sure there are many peers who want to scrutinise the bill in a sensible way, but they are being thwarted by a handful who seem intent on stopping law change at any cost.” Dr Jacky Davis theguardian.com/society/2025/d…

Surely as you’ve been a longstanding advocate for democracy, while supporting Lords scrutiny role, you don’t condone a minority of Lords extinguishing the AD Bill by filibustering!

Prolonging a life full of pain – or if not pain, discomfort, indignity, only a half-life because so full of morphine – seems to me to be both cruel & unethical, if someone in the final stages of life has clearly proved that they want to choose a better death. 3/

Marking more than a year since compassion won out in the historic Commons vote on Kim Leadbeater MBE MP's Bill, the gratitude felt by families up & down the country is palpable. But they are not complacent. MPs listened and acted. Now the Lords must respect that democratic mandate.

To mark one year since MPs voted yes to the assisted dying Bill, supporters held nearly 40 events nationwide to thank them. As Brighton supporter Alison put it: “Momentum is only growing.” The message to the Lords is clear: it's time to deliver choice at the end of life.

Alarm is growing in the Lords at a minority using undemocratic tactics to stall the assisted dying Bill. 1,100+ amendments – including a “grotesque” call to film every assisted death – aim to block progress, with risks to Lords reputation if they defy MPs' will.

Amendments to the assisted dying Bill propose raising the minimum age from 18 to 25. Today, Dianne Hayter argued that would undermine the dignity and autonomy this Bill aims to provide.

.Sam Carling MP🌹: branded [the proposed ban for terminally ill adults under 25] “patronising”. “It is cruel, discriminatory and should not be passed – not for my sake [as a 23 year old] but for terminally ill adults across the country..." independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…

Plus, PA reports: "Peers have faced accusations of derailing the proposal, after they tabled a record number of suggested changes..." On slow progress, Gov HoL Chief Whip: "I think that all noble Lords need to reflect on that before we resume the consideration of this Bill..."

NEW: In a joint letter, senior peers including 3 former cabinet secretaries and 3 former Lords speakers have warned peers not to use procedural manoeuvres to thwart the assisted dying bill. With 1,100+ amendments tabled, they warn the reputation of Parliament is on the line.

Assisted dying’s disgraceful delay While peers obstruct the bill, many like my brother Nicholas are condemned to suffer By Jonathan Dimbleby newstatesman.com/politics/uk-po…

A neat rhetorical move, but constitutionally upside down. The Lords’ limits exist because the primacy of the elected House must be insulated from an unelected chamber, not because that primacy is in doubt. The settlement works to prevent precisely the scenario you imply.

"That would be wrong from a democratic perspective when the Commons has voted for it." Kim Leadbeater MP, who introduced the proposals to legalise assisted dying, on the possibility that the bill could fall in the House of Lords.

Many people are concerned about how the Assisted Dying Bill is being handled in the Lords. Scrutiny matters, but so does respecting the will of the elected House. It’s important that this process remains serious, proportionate, and focused on the Bill.

Ahead of the 10th anniversary of the murder of my sister Jo Cox I spoke to PoliticsHome for their Women in Westminster series about my reluctant route into politics, the many challenges of public life, including rising levels of abuse & violence & learning to disagree well.

Compassion & respect for personal choice winning out yet again. “There’s a lot of religious conflict in me, the way I was raised. But I realized it’s not about me, it’s about 20 million New Yorkers... "I was taught that God is merciful and compassionate, and so must we be.”

She has been told that some [opposed] peers were overheard talking about a sweepstake on how few amendments could be dealt with at each session. She said, “I would like to look them in the eye and say: ‘...Do you think it’s a game? It’s not a game. These are people’s lives."
