Not enough nurses & docs. “Covenant Health has the two hospitals that are struggling the worst for general internal medicine coverage and nighttime coverage for access to their hospitals. But they don't have to transparently report that, whereas AHS does.” edmonton.ctvnews.ca/covenant-healt…

Check out the ATA's new campaign. Alberta spends THE LEAST on public education per student in all of Canada. #abed #ableg #StopTheExcuses #TheLeast #PublicEducation

This is an example of what happens when multiple Clinical Service Providers are added to the HC system without a clear plan on how they should be coordinated... Lower overall numbers, less coordination, and access to critical emergency surgery diminished. edmontonjournal.com/news/local-new…

Couple of interesting points on ED closures in this community: 1 - Years of closures has nothing to do with scheduling or "holiday coverage". It's HCW retention/recruitment 2 - changing to CH won't improve staffing or bring board closer to the community townandcountrytoday.com/athabasca-news…

I am so, so tired of this. I've been trying to avoid this place but this article just got to me. /1 Painful surgical delays point to tug-of-war between Alberta hospitals and chartered surgical facilities edmontonjournal.com/news/local-new… via Edmonton Journal

Wonderful thread by someone who really knows the YEG situation. GoA is responsible for the healthcare problem. They control all the levers/competition. They have a surplus. They could fix this right now - there are solutions. They just don't want to.

Please look at this map of hosp service disruptions! This is NOT: "docs taking holidays at that same time" and will NOT be fixed by: "changing management" the govt of AB funds/owns/controls these hospitals... FULL STOP. google.com/maps/d/u/0/vie…

Take a read of this thread... CH is equally challenged regarding HC workforce issues, and capacity issues. CH has simply never had to publicly declare their challenges. They've hidden quiet under their big brother AHS's shadow and have stayed under the radar.

I have repeatedly and earnestly said that we in the emergency department continuously feel we are set up to fail on a daily basis. Yesterday four separate calls to four separate hospitals to get a patient with a mental health crisis assessed,. This is bullshit.

"General internal medicine physicians care for the most complex patients with overlapping, multiple health issues." These docs are the last line of defense for acute inpatient care. If they are unable to fill the gaps, the acute care system will crumble. edmontonjournal.com/news/local-new…

Our acute care system, specifically our hospitals, are really struggling... and we KNOW that our volumes and acuity are only going to increase in the weeks to come (it happens every year in a very predictable fashion) see 🧵👇

Just today I was talking to an ER doc who was expressing her frustration that this is becoming the new normal. There is nothing normal about this.

This is the reality across our province…. And one refrain I often hear when this is brought up is “it’s bad across Canada”… as if that means nothing can be done… It means we have to be competitive in AB, and we have to plan to deliver HC in the face of global HCW shortages

And the tear down is in full flight. This change should be studied closely, but sadly I’m not confident we’ll learn much. Provincial Governments aren’t too keen to put a microscope on this kind of reorganization edmontonjournal.com/news/recovery-…
