2/3 of energy sector job growth in 2023 was in clean energy, with manufacturing accounting for 40% of new roles. Oil & gas jobs also expanded, but coal jobs are in structural decline due to a slowdown in the pipeline of new coal-fired power plants & continued productivity gains.

Emerging & developing economies outside of China represent 60% of the world's labour force, but only 1/4 of recent clean energy job growth. Some countries see success stories, but many struggle to attract the clean energy investment that fuels job creation.

Across energy industries, most of the 190 companies that International Energy Agency surveyed report difficulty hiring skilled workers. Upskilling workers to specialise in energy can be a time- and cost-effective way to address labour shortages.

Energy wages are rising with the increasing demand for skilled workers. In major economies, energy sector wages rose by up to 9%, outpacing non-energy wages at 6%. Clean energy wages increased faster on average than fossil fuel industry wages.
