#OTD in 1914, HMAS Sydney defeated the German raider SMS Emden at Cocos (Keeling) Islands. This first battle of the Royal Australian Navy was commemorated in a flurry of teacups, milk jugs, medallions, pillowcases (!), etc, examples of which are in Aust War Memorial collection.

Do you know where the phrase "lest we forget" comes from? Kipling's 1897 poem "Recessional", for Queen Vic's Diamond Jubilee. Poem warns against imperial hubris. When he reprinted it in 1903 it came to be associated with Boer War remembrance. Aust War Memorial (Img: Trove)
