At 4:43 am, when Private Robert Hartley jumped into the water to land with the 9th Battalion at Anzac Cove, the watch in his pocket was covered in salt water.

Unbeknownst to Hartley his watch was permanently frozen at the exact time he landed.

A crowd of more than 32,000 people gathered in the dark this morning at the Australian War Memorial for the #AnzacDay Dawn Service, commemorating the 109th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.

Today, we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service. The spirit of Anzac, with its qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.
