Reality of rough sleeping is grim, when I see people bedding down outside it hits home as I know that reality. It can break you not just physically but mentally, dealing with the wet, cold nights but also the isolation, fear & judgement, grateful to have a home #EndHomelessness

The fear associated with rough sleeping for me was driven by feeling unsafe. One night maybe 3am I felt a kick to the side of my sleeping bag, 5 or 6 drunk young men attacked me while laughing & joking abt beating up the "junkie". That made each night after that harder.

In 1986 Switzerland opened it's first drug consumption room 1986 - that's 38 years ago Let that sink in, 38 years ago Meanwhile in October 2024 the first official one in the UK will open Lot of pain and tears along the way but it's happening, it's finally happening

40 years ago, Switzerland faced a drug death & blood-borne virus transmissions crisis among drug users, akin to Scotland now. However they shifted away from the war on drugs, drug-free ideology, adopting harm reduction. As a result, deaths are rare, & BBV's are nearly eradicated.

How did you learn the war on drugs is harmful to people? For me: Getting arrested for how I looked as a homeless teenager & being handcuffed so tightly I've still got the marks on my wrists 30 years on, then being taken to the police station, thrown in a cell & beaten up.

Some will say- "Well, that was a long time ago. Things have changed, policing has changed." Well, this video was only 3 years ago, not 30 3 young homeless people lined up against a wall & searched. Drug prohibition is a tool of social control & oppression.
