Now for something surprising: I see this rather differently.
The important thing here is not the Scottish Govt choosing to let go of this target; the important thing is that >it has patently not done the things since bringing in this target which would make the target attainable<

While there are some committed actors, a lot of climate change politics can still be described as empty promises that are withdrawn after years of doing nothing.

Not my expertise but Julian Jessop (once again) highlights a generic Brexit issue:

a) The UK had lots of pre-existing structural problems pre-Brexit
b) Brexit was supposed to help solve them
c) Instead, it's mostly made them somewhat worse
d) this was predictable (& predicted)

Precisely this. If we can ‘just adapt’ to climate change, why aren’t we doing so?

It is in my view going to be a political error for British Conservatives in the 2020s to find too much common cause with authoritarian populist Orban & voices further to his right across Europe/USA. But that is a mistake they should be at liberty to make that others can criticise

I think the National Conservativism conference should have been able to proceed. A capital city like Brussels should surely be able to police and protect both an international political event and a counter-protest about the ideas or speakers at that event politico.eu/article/brusse…
