Some image generating AI can run on consumer graphics cards (only ~4 GB VRAM needed for SDXL).

However, it is less accurate/powerful than tools like DALL-E & Midjourney.

Is there any information on the hardware requirements for those? Will next-gen PCs have MJ like powers?

Snow cover is record low across North America and especially the US. Lots of dreaming of White Christmases but not many living it. Thread 1/

Want to know what a world with 1.5 °C of global warming looks like?

The last several months have already given us a taste as 2023 barrels towards an almost certain new annual record, that may itself exceed 1.5 °C.

The September to November season was a scorcher, with the three largest global temperature anomalies on record.

19% of the Earth's surface – including 32% of the land – saw a three month average that set a new local record high.

Berkeley Earth November Temperature Update

The warmest November since measurements began in 1850, with records for both land and ocean individually.

Essentially certain that 2023 becomes the warmest year, and very likely to exceed 1.5 °C in our dataset.

This is a great animation in visually explaining a tipping point. Change can only be gradual to a point. Certain systems exist in two completely different states, and a tipping point flips a switch.

Lava comes in various forms.

Sometimes it emerges with explosive force. Other times, like here, it flows out more gently and coats large areas.

This fissure is a few kilometers long, which is large for today, but ancient geology shows lava flows that covered millions of km².

update 1240 GST 12 December

In case you were wondering, no, COP28 has not concluded at 1100, as the presidency insisted

Why not? Here's the latest list of topics that are agreed, not agreed and (in some cases) even lacking draft text

To my friends at AGU:

The Berkeley Earth related talk scheduled for this afternoon is going to have to be cancelled.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, no one will be available to present it. 😧

So sorry, for the inconvenience.

In 8 years of attending climate talks, I have never felt so much like we're getting real about what matters. It's kind of blowing my mind.

Day 11 of , and the Arabic tradition of Majlis has Ministers talking straight about the realities of phasing out fossil fuels 🧵

After agreeing on a host had been delayed by geopolitics, it seems that next year's climate summit (COP29) will be in Azerbaijan.

COP30 in 2025 will be in Brazil.

Just out, a 66 million year history of atmospheric CO2. Key take away: CO2 hasn't been at today's levels for at least 3 million years. These high CO2 worlds in the geological past had less ice and *much* higher sea levels 📈🌊 science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

This is really quite something... sea ice extent is back to a record low for the current date. This is actually below 2016, which was previously a massive outlier in November and December.

'As a sign of good gesture, the Republic of Armenia supports the bid of the Republic of Azerbaijan to host the 29th Session of the Conference of Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, by withdrawing its own candidacy.'

I've been working over the past year on a promising new pathway to remove carbon from the atmosphere: Enhanced Rock Weathering.

With today's $57 million offtake agreement with Lithos Carbon the approach has gone mainstream: frontierclimate.com/writing/lithos

Here's a thread in pictures about the Atlantic overturning circulation which is making headlines this week. I've studied this topic since 1991 and will show key data and models & some video.
