Three points for preachers— 1. Your sermon notes have never saved anybody. 2. Let this relieve some of the stress you carry into the pulpit. 3. The Holy Spirit works through His word, and oftentimes despite your words.

#Astros Justin Verlander was in the league with Julio Franco, who was intentionally walked by Jim Kaat, who allowed a pair of hits to Ted Williams, who made his big league debut against Lou Gehrig, who hit four home runs off Walter Johnson, who once beaned Cy Young.

Do you really need endless conversations with the immature version of yourself that never wants to grow up? Then why are you drawn to that best-selling book, podcast, movie or TV show that’s just going to reinforce that basic narrative?

We live in a unbelieving world where people desire to be loved unconditionally and yet love those around them based on what they do for them. If you decide to make people audition for your affection in a continual way, it will destroy them and you.

I often wonder when I am in a spiritual wilderness if it’s partly because I refuse to accept the tensions that come with living in the complexities of life? So, I withdraw to a place that feels less bewildering, but is in fact even more barren.

The minute we stop seeing others as - disagreements to have - arguments to make - problems to solve - or opinions to disregard is the minute we begin seeing others.

To divorce the act of preaching from the regular practice of pastoral care is to - over time - turn ministry of the word into a kind of cold theological mathematics absent the beauty and resonance of true biblical preaching, which is for the salvation and the comfort of the soul

Being “hated without cause” (Ps. 69) doesn’t mean you are innocent of all wrongdoing in your life. It means that some people will withhold grace & mercy from you based on their own wrongdoing, not your own. A sad, but helpful distinction to make in order to avoid crazy-making.
