“We need to be talking about the root causes of why we’re seeing this spike in poor health rather than blaming individuals or GPs for the process around it.”

🗣️ Almost two thirds of people in destitution live with a chronic health condition or disability. Cutting people’s eligibility for benefits won't help.

The PM's speech was an irresponsible war of words on people who already aren’t getting enough support.

Politicians with leadership aspirations for legacy take note: bold public health action is good for your performance at both the ballot box and in the history books

Remarkable the extent of support for this.

The public, charities, businesses and most MPs are up for it. Opposition is limited to extreme arguments from the fringes.

Political parties should take notice and back more and bolder public health policies!

Another record high number of people not expecting to return to work due to disabilities & poor health in today's ONS stats at over 2.8m

That's an increase of almost 1m people over the last 5yrs - the human fallout of rising poverty, poor-quality jobs & crumbling public services

So little of the debate about young people falling out of the labour market has focused on what it's actually like to be a young person in/looking for work

Margaret Heffernan does a great job here of conveying what a profoundly depressing experience that can be ft.com/content/4b16c3…

Plan so far:

- Ignore 2020 obesity strategy
- No plan for prevention in social care
- Take staff and money out of OHID
- Take staff and money out of other key areas like Health and Safety Executive
- Decommission health index

Looking forward to seeing yet another new plan!

🚨Lowest levels of satisfaction with the NHS in the 41 years we've been asking, at 24%. Very high levels of support for founding principles - free at point of need, available to everyone, publicly funded. Key message: people support the NHS, they want it to work better 👇

Nearly half (48%) of the public would support the government increasing taxes and spending more on the NHS...91% backed it being free of charge when you need it with 82% saying it should be primarily funded through taxation.

Another BBC article that doesn’t engage in vaping evidence and jumps to anecdote. BBC editorial line on this is out of kilter with most academics - who did you talk to?

The three ways this is stupendously wrong.

1. People's distress is very real

2. Econ inactivity due to sickness rarely down to one factor. It's down to multiple needs. Multiple health conditions + more.

3. Reducing welfare doesn't support access to work.
