The right to discuss working conditions with your colleagues/bosses is fundamentally protected under the NLRA. The San Francisco Chronicle, a NEWS org, has issued a gag order against a San Francisco Chronicle Guild steward, preventing them from discussing working conditions with their bosses by email or slack.

Unacceptable and disappointing (but sadly, not surprising) behavior from Adams Publishing Group. This is just the latest action that shows APG does not care about local journalism or the people who create its product.

Our publisher brought up continued furloughs at the Wyoming Tribune Eagle as a reason not to unionize. We don’t want to speak for Cheyenne News Guild but the furloughs are anti-worker shenanigans from Adams, wyofile.com/cheyenne-journ…

Following almost complete turnover of our staff last summer, we remain unable to hire anyone for two open positions. In a news staff of four, that’s half of our positions open for close to 9 months.

I could go on & on about burnout, but the impact on the incredible staff we do have should be evident.

We still officially must work 37.5 hours/week, although necessity means we often work over 40 just to put the paper out. Which makes it all the more ridiculous that APG still refuses to officially restore us to 40 hours/week.

Not being able to guarantee prospective hires 40 hrs/week, paired with low wages & a rising cost of living, means few (if any) qualified applicants. Reporters in Cheyenne (like in other cities) also consistently struggle to find affordable, quality housing.

Last year, our newsroom lost about 25% of its reporters — not to layoffs, which also slashed our ranks, but to new jobs elsewhere. To thrive, we need to be able to compete for talented, dedicated ppl. Please help us tell Lee Enterprises to invest in its staff: bit.ly/3CZ3afF

Today the San Francisco Chronicle Guild is talking about equity. There is still inequity in our wages based on seniority, race and gender, and the company has been resistant to our proposals related to strengthening  guarantees of non-discrimination, as well as our proposals to grow wages fairly.

Today, members of San Francisco Chronicle Guild are sending a letter to our publisher, Bill Nagel, asking him to show up at the table at our next bargaining session and to work with us to achieve an equitable contract.
