🧵Since it is becoming hard to track, here is a thread of the simply astounding weather records planet Earth has started shattering in recent weeks: 1. Dramatic flood events have begun striking various countries around the world simultaneously this week. x.com/Rishusharma26/…

The The New York Times violated core principles of our contract with its decision to shutter our Sports desk and replace it with The Athletic. We will not stand for the company’s brazen union-busting or its attempts to pit workers against each other. washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/07…

FANTASTIC NEWS! Spread the word: The Elmwood Theatre in Berkeley is set to reopen Friday at 3:30 p.m. for normal operations after this week’s car crash. We’re hoping to snag Oppenheimer tix if it’s not too late! BKGD: berkeleyscanner.com/2023/07/20/tra…

I'm a fan of the Athletic and their coverage. But at the The New York Times, sports reporting -- no matter the label -- is union work, and sports jobs are union jobs. I stand with more than 1,000 of my colleagues in demanding that Times management stop its blatant union-busting.

Whether or not it was the intention, "subcontracting" the sports desk to a non-union, company-owned outlet 100% undermines the Guild. Hopefully management will do the right thing and include our Athletic colleagues under the CBA. If not, we'll see whether an arbitrator agrees.

The The New York Times needs to take a time out on union busting. More than 1,000 NYTimesGuild, @WirecutterUnion + New York Times Tech Guild members delivered this petition yesterday, demanding that Times management stop violating our contract and respect union work.

The The New York Times's decision to replace our Sports section with a nonunion subsidiary sets a troubling precedent. I’ve learned so much from our Sports team this year, watching them cover everything from the new MLB rules to UFC bouts to the Westminster Dog Show. Their jobs are union jobs, and should stay that way.

I'm a big fan of The Athletic, particularly No Dunks and The Pulse. But the The New York Times's choice to replace our Sports section with a nonunion subsidiary is troubling. I stand with my guild colleagues in demanding that The Times stop violating our contract and respect union work.

I'm baffled by @NYTimes's decision to eliminate our Sports desk & replace it with The Athletic, which is owned by NYT but isn't unionized. It's not just disrespectful—it's union-busting. I've joined 1,000+ of my colleagues to demand that management stop violating our contract ✊🏼

In July, I was lucky enough to travel to Florida to learn about what's happening to trans ***ADULTS*** in the state -- how a new law there has made obtaining gender-affirming care onerous... and sometimes impossible. A thread on my feature for The Guardian. theguardian.com/us-news/2023/j…

Here's a real way to support folks on the ground in Maui right now. Help journalists there pay for childcare, PPE and more as they keep us informed. Grateful to our The NewsGuild-CWA sibs at The Maui News PacificMediaWorkers gofund.me/10e854c6

We're getting our first look at Lahaina’s historic banyan tree after a wildfire tore through the town. Video shows it’s still standing but smoldering at its base. The tree has served as a gathering place for 150 years. abc7ne.ws/3KD6KRz
