We are doing a great job in Ireland at keeping kids in school until they finish secondary level. Only 5% of children don't stay to the end of 6th year. That's one of the best school retention rates in the world. 🇮🇪👏 oecd.org/en/publication…

An interesting thing that happened during the slave revolt of the Haitian Revolution, is that about 500 Polish soldiers, after realizing they were being used by the French to suppress a slave revolt, joined the Haitians instead and fought on their side.

Guinness Yeast Extract, Ireland's Marmite/Vegemite; odd that yeast extracts never managed to get a significant toe hold in the Irish market, maybe in towns? But can only think of one household in my rural childhood that regularly used them and they were returnees from England.

It's Friday the 13th! The unluckiest day of the year! Except, it isn't. Because that couldn't possibly be a thing. And yet, countless people insist otherwise. Why? Here's an article I wrote about exactly that, almost a decade ago theguardian.com/science/brain-… #FridayThe13th

Busy and constructive meeting of the North South Ministerial Council today in Dublin Castle. The meeting took place against a backdrop of very warm and positive North-South and British-Irish relations. We are committed to delivering for people across this island together.

The GPO looking fine as always. Nicely flanked by the well-pruned trees on either side & the two Greek Gods & the mythical figure of Hibernia on top. Remarkably it's one of the very few vistas that DCC hasn't managed to completely ruin with bollards, M50 signs & useless clutter.
