This is the view from the bottom of the vineyard pit in Dona Paula’s Alluvia. Look at those roots, struggling to survive and then somehow producing wines redolent of the incense of an ancient Catholic Cathedral. Ah, nature, coaxed into splendour but not controlled by human hand.

Very interesting observation from Martin Kaiser, winemaker Doña Paula ‘We should be wary of challenging consumers. Wine critics taste hundreds of wines and are always looking for something different, something new. But consumers drink wines for enjoyment, not for study.’

Now that’s what I call a proper vine. It was planted as a table grape in 1973, grafted onto Syrah in 1990- well, that’s what they THOUGHT- in fact it was Petite Sirah- which they could have just consigned to the bin, but instead Santa Rita make it into inspiring Bougainville red.

This Merlot No.3 vineyard makes stunning wine for Santa Claus Rita winery’s Floresta label. Except it’s not Merlot. It’s Carmenere. Why don’t they change the name? Well, it’s done fine for 100 years. So…Most Chilean Merlot used to be mostly Carmenere, not long ago. Everyone loved it.

Pergola-trained Petite Sirah at Santa Rita in Maipo. They wanted to plant Syrah but in 1990 UC Davis didn’t have any, so they settled for Petite Sirah, thinking it a clone. Of course it’s entirely different, but it worked, so they now make the 100% varietal Bougainville from it.
