I am begging some people to realize you can have a MA and a JD and make 50K a year doing important work but living paycheck to paycheck.

TEACHING JOBS. And you *also* have to have a credential on top of the BA or BS. And if you’d like to advance in pay you need a masters. And you’ll still be making less than 125k.

I know I don’t say it enough but, to all the childless people out there that are paying for my kids to go to grade school, thanks

On average Black borrowers carry a heavier burden of student loan debt than white borrowers. The disparity reflects a racial wealth gap in the U.S. — one that some advocates say the debt relief plan does not do enough to narrow. apnews.com/article/biden-…

Folks. Cannot stress this enough. Federal student debt payments have been paused since March 2020. If you made any payments since then, YOU CAN REQUEST A REFUND through your student loan servicer. That money—quite literally—belongs to you.

One more thing I’m noticing is the rhetorical framework positioning people with student loans and taxpayers as two totally different populations. You see a similar tack around investments in Black communities as if some people simply never pay taxes.

I wish more economists knew someone who was $27K in debt from culinary school and making $10.50/hr. Or a vet tech student with $19K in loans and earning $31K. But hey, we can’t get economists out of their racially segregated school districts, so this is hopeless.

In high school I applied to CalArts for Film Production. I was accepted but I couldn’t pay for it. As an undocumented person loans weren’t an option & scholarships were insufficient I’m proud of what I’ve done without a four-year degree, but I’ll always wonder what could’ve been.

People with student debt are MORE likely to be employed. ~10% of student debt is held by people who make LESS than $15. I get that y’all don’t give a fuck about other people but the idea that student loan debtors are lazy, financially irresponsible freeloaders is INSANE.

I wrote about the long push for student debt cancellation and where we can go from here. Below is a point that too many critics of this effort miss. newrepublic.com/article/167539…

The student debt fight is why understanding the history of race construction, racism, race hierarchy is critical. Our divestment in public goods begins with integration & Black people getting access.Large # white people oppose economic policies if they think Black people benefit.

One of those weird US things where we've moved so far right we forget than not going into student debt was simply the norm just 50 years ago
