We did not discover ‘mental disorders’ we created them, by draping very real human suffering in medical symbolism, just as the conquistadors claimed the new lands by draping them with their flags.

What if the DSM was not a manual of “disorders” but instead, a compendium of mental and emotional difficulties for which people might receive treatment? Could we then stop the endless debates about semantics/politics/ideology and get on with providing care to those who seek

This award exposes huge cognitive dissonance. It reveals the idea that this issue is blown out of proportion is false. RCPsych has not made withdrawal/tapering a part of its curriculum (this page is ‘for patients’), it still minimises the issue whenever possible in public.

Drug companies, & the Drs working for them, created the term 'Discontinuation Syndrome' as a euphemism for 'withdrawal', as they were worried the term 'withdrawal' would put consumers off, bringing attention to a problem they were keen to downplay... It's really that simple.
