Using #biologging & modelling tools Dr Leena Riekkola - @finntasticleena.bsky.social & colleagues were able to reveal & investigate the many aspects of movement ecology in a long ranging marine migrant, the endangered Oceania humpback whales, from migratory behaviour & energetics to their habitat use patterns.

Ocean deoxygenation leads to vertical habitat compression of pelagic #sharks 🦈& increases vulnerability of capture by industrialized longline fishing. New DO logging #tags used by the David Sims are providing data on actual shark responses for estimating future impacts.

#Jaguars are #predators well adapted to a variety of habitats. Marcos Brito investigates how home ranges & movement patterns are affected in a highly seasonal Amazon floodplain where the annual flood pulse covers all land in a high-waters season that can last up to 4 mo./yr.

Do Ravens follow large carnivores? Matthias Loretto shares that Yellowstone National Park #ravens cover larger areas than wolves/cougars; ravens exploit more wolf than puma kills, approach kills directly from up to 155km. No indication for following, instead anthropogenic food sources used

Join us for our first Featured Oral Session of the final day of #BLS7Hawaii, Environmental Studies Using Bio-logging Data featuring Shinichi Watanabe, うつぼ, Camrin Braun, Theresa Keates and CEBC/ChizéLab… all talks will be available for replay within a few hours!

Shinichi Watanabe shares about a recently developed micro CTD logger mounted on Naru #eaglerays that could successfully measure vertical structures of temp/salinity in #coastal #water w/ fine temporal & vertically spatial scales. Haloclines observed when heavy rainfalls occurred.

Old #biologging instruments, new uses: 16 yrs. of time-depth recorders on northern #elephantseals resurface for oceanographic applications/ecology. Theresa Keates shows seals in search of deep-water prey use mesoscale ocean features & profile w/ high resolution temp measurements

The newly developed micro-sonar #tags helped CEBC/ChizéLab characterize the mid trophic level assemblage in the southern #elephantseal habitats in Argentina and showed us that it is linked to water mass physical properties but not directly to #foraging behaviors of the seals.

#Pacific #cod in the #BeringSea are moving north as waters warm and sea ice decreases. Listen to Julie Nielson's talk to find out how satellite #tags provide insights into the nature of this northward shift in Pacific cod distribution & implications for #fisheries #management.

Little is known about collective movement or its importance in informing the decisions of individuals within a group. Hila Shamon & colleagues tracked movements & assessed genetic relatedness of 30% of a Plains #bison herd. We found relatedness impacted herd collective movements.

Social mole-rats live exclusively underground in large groups with a single breeding female (queen). Using body-acceleration biologging, Shay Rotics & colleagues studied their work division in the wild & found queens engage less in cooperative activities than non-breeding indivs.
