Today is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day and the longest night in deepest, darkest winter. This event was once so important, those who lived in Scotland thousands of years ago had to mark it in some way. That's one of the theories behind our ancient stone circles.

This is the Neolithic chambered cairn of Maeshowe in #Orkney which was built 5000 years ago. Every year on the #WinterSolstice (if the sky is clear) the setting sun shines down a perfectly aligned passageway and illuminates the inner chamber.💡

It was the UK's coldest night of winter so far. The temperature fell to minus 13.3°C in Loch Glascarnoch, Scotland 📉 Southeast England was much milder though, with temperatures remaining in double figures in places 📈

This is why I would urge people in Scotland to contact their MP, & 3rd sector to engage with the UK Govt consultation. I'd urge MSPs and all Scottish MPs to fight to protect sick & disabled people in Scotland, and to preserve the much better social security system here.

The reason why so many of us are on X #WelfareNotWarfare & not protesting in person, is because WE are too ill to travel & sit out in the cold. This doesn’t mean that we don’t see you Labour Party & shake our heads to the utter betrayal by these barbaric reforms.
