Great to see #Wikidata and BHL (amongst others) being shown on the digital extended specimen presentation slide at the International Botanical Congress. #IBC2024

Goodbye Madrid! I had the most amazing time @IBC2024 it was wonderful to meet colleagues I’d long worked with but had never met in person! Fascinating presentations and great new opportunities! #IBC2024 #Wikidata

Heading to Kew Gardens today! So looking forward to this visit. I’m getting to see Nicky Nicolson in her natural environment and will get to see their specimen digitisation process. Cant’t wait!

Last week, I spent 5 days at the NHM, London, IDing deep sea fish and generally gawping at ichthyological oddities. I must confess, though, that I had an ulterior motive. In this thread I'm going tell you the whole story and show you the single coolest fish I've ever found! 1/

We honour the legacy of Museum of Nature research associate, Dr. Jarmila Peck, who passed away, aged 94. An expert on origins of flight in insects, she generously donated her world-class fossil collection and funded insect research programs at our museum. bit.ly/3YK8aS3

So I’ve attended several #SPNHC and #TDWG conferences and the continuing theme for me is how invested & hard working ALL the attendees are in preserving, creating, curating & enriching biodiversity specimens & data for the benefit of EVERYONE. #tdwg2024

So inspiring to hear about the Rutgers University “Herbarium Army”. Env & Biol Science students must complete 126 hours of experience-based learning and boy do they get that with Megan King, coming away with so many work & life skills (and their collection is now 98% digitised!) #TDWG2024

Lovely to hear from Alison Vaughan about the work, contribution & legacy of Eileen Ramsey, who collected over 1000 species in Australia’s mallee, creating the most complete mallee collection in existence at the time (1950s). RBG Victoria #TDWG2024 #SPNHC2024

A bulk attribution feature under development that has until now been used exclusively by the Bionomia bot. It requires care, precision, and good user documentation. Coming soon!

Deployed! Also added some enhancements to this new feature to make it more useful. Look for this under "Bulk Attributions" / "Semi-automated" Siobhan Sabine von Mering

A refresh to data from Observation.org has pushed the #GBIF index past #3billion records! With <100 million records, this 🇳🇱-based NGO is also a formal #GBIF Participant, whose massive #CitizenScience contribution often goes overlooked—hartelijk gefeliciteerd! gbif.org

Earlier this week featured the release of a semi-automated tool to link records. It's interesting because it melds algorithm-based "search" with user control over their desirable precision of "find". Something like this might perhaps be generalized for digital extended specimens.

Bionomia The more I use this tool the more I love it. Am now starting to use the extra “add on” limits to the search like collection and date. Even the “view” element for each string really helps, as if there are two folk with the same string it just jumps out at you!

I've been working on the #Wikidata #mixNmatch dataset Harvard University Herbaria index of botanists. mix-n-match.toolforge.org/#/catalog/2099 I just worked out who "W. H. Hart" is. It's William Hume Hart. Worked on him in @Wikidata & Bionomia & then went on to his more famous brother.
