So this is really telling: Lars P Feld personal advisor to German Finance Minister Lindner applauding simplistic quantity-theoretic critique (sic) of ECB support for Italy and blaming "refusal to reform". Seriously folks do we really want to refight those battles?

When one reads the amount of commentary on the possible loss of income by 3-5% by the average EU citizen and at the same time reads of degrowth proposals that would cut Western incomes by 60%, one feels a total disconnect.

Watching this horribly wrong “explainer“ of ECB monetary policy from the main German news program hints at why 🇩🇪 public opinion on money and central banks continues to draw heavily on outdated monetarist thinking.

When your mortgage financing system blows up and leads to a global recession, so you nearly abolish the adjustable rate mortgage just to then lead the largest global hiking cycle in 50 years and screw over every country that kept the adjustable rate mortgage system.

This the generalized version of the superstar firm dilemma. Within-industry dispersion of productivity has been rising secularly since at least 1987. This is the secret motor that is generating increasingly polarized outcomes for firms and their workers.👀

Really striking and important work on "Do Politicians Affect Firm Outcomes? Evidence from Connections to the German Federal Parliament" by Andrea Weber & co. @BSE_Berlin on Monday. Food for thought for thinking critically about compliance rules and public policy/politics in 🇩🇪

Da wäre was los, auf allen Ebenen.

4/ Key finding #1: In the past forty years inflation has been systematically higher for the poor, with important implications for the measurement of inequality and the poverty line. In short: inequality has increased about 45% faster than with the conventional measure!

ICYMI: Last fall, I had asked Pettis about the direction of causality and the overly mechanistic aspects of his framework. I think it’s iffy to frame fiscal deficits as primarily the result of trade deficits and I think financial inflows are driven primarily by higher returns.

A journalist’s job is to question power. When reporters start asking the world to thank governments, they are doing PR for them
