WHO ARE WE The Project for Sanitation Justice is an academic-community partnership among San Diego State University faculty and student researchers, and @ThinkDignity, a grassroots San Diego organization that advances basic dignity for people experiencing homelessness through advocacy and innovation.
San Diego State University @ThinkDignity WHAT WE DO Founded in 2020, PSJ aims to gather rigorous, high-quality data on public restrooms & other basic water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) resources in San Diego County and across CA, and to use these data to inform smarter, more equitable distribution of WaSH resources.
San Diego State University @ThinkDignity WHY WE DO IT We believe that safe and consistent access to drinking water, toilets, menstrual hygiene products, and other basic sanitation resources are fundamental human rights, cornerstones of public health, and essential public services.

In our Punishment and Society article, we conceptualize and visualize how deliberate sanitation deprivation in urban environments functions as a punishment regime inflicted on residents, especially unhoused residents, to the detriment of public health and safety. 🚽 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/14…
Must read new article Punishment and Society conceptualizing "Sanitation Justice" in relation to human and environmental rights of the houseless. Project for Sanitation Justice details mechanisms of sanitation deprivation that complements my work w/ colleagues on the weaponization of sanitation in sweeps.
Last week, our team met with Mid-City CAN’s Improving Transportation in City Heights (ITCH) team to discuss water, hygiene, and sanitation access in Mid-City San Diego—highlighting the need for restrooms at transit stops and parks. Thanks for having us, Mid-City CAN! 🚽🚰🧼
Join us & Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy next week for the first virtual discussion in the California Issues Forum series!
