A memorial service tonight. The Mourner's Kaddish was recited, a prayer for the hostages, a prayer for the IDF, and a prayer for the State of Israel. The name of each hostage was read aloud, followed by the word "now." Their names echoed through the night.

My grandfather came to NY from Riga-3 siblings followed. One stayed, miraculously survived and his descendants fled to Israel when allowed. Recently made contact-hearing now about the horrible antisemitism they faced in Riga until they left. I used to think the world had changed.

As photos emerge revealing more of the horrors the hostages endured, I draw their profound strength. Eden's hands evoking thousands of years of Shabbat candles. Of Chanukah candles. Of light over darkness. They will never extinguish Eden's light. Am Yisrael Chai

Theodor Herzl wrote a most likely autobiographical story (excerpt below) perfectly expressing a "return to Judaism." His words are as powerful after October 7 as they were when he first published it under his Hebrew name in 1897.

"A river, with its waterfalls and meadows, a lake, a hill, a cliff or individual rocks, a forest, and ancient trees standing singly... such things educate far more than any hired teachers or preachers, or any at present recognized system of school education." -Thoreau, Journal

When Walden Pond froze several years back it was magical walking across it. Now I appreciate Thoreau's disdain for Harvard even more, and especially his reply to Emerson's statement that Harvard taught all the branches of knowledge: "Yes, all the branches and none of the roots."

The horrific images of the brave people of Iran clinging to their loved ones in body bags. The silence of the world to their cries. Until today.

Researching my bubby from Rovno. She walked across Europe for a boat here.(Then got nephews to Israel) Her siblings and their children left behind were all murdered. It's estimated that only 1.5% of Volhynia's Jews survived. An entire world of people destroyed. I owe her my life.
