People say, “At least you have insurance.” No. If you can't afford to use your insurance, you do NOT have insurance. You have a monthly bill.

A very practical concern for young people is finding a spouse. I am trying to help by hosting events for singles at my parish. The last event I hosted, we had FIVE marriages come out of it! But like last time, I have to scratch and claw to get men to sign up! Right now: 50 women

It’s actually wild how many boomers got remarried later in life to people who have utter contempt for their children. Like what are you even doing lmao? Why would you marry someone who doesn’t even get along with your family? All this mess because they’re scared to be alone.

Math scores didn’t collapse overnight. They collapsed because we treated memorization as a sin and cluttered the curriculum with “strategies.” Reading got its science moment; math is overdue.

In the same way, kids are literally being told not to memorize multiplication facts. And we wonder why we have a math education crisis in this country.

I’m opposed to piracy but I do believe that if you buy a physical book you have a divine right to download the pdf by any means necessary

I want to scream this from the rooftops. And it's not just a message of the 60's and on...I saw a cartoon from the 1920's where a cat's girlfriend had kittens and he went to a factory and sucked poison gas so he didn't have to get married and take care of the kittens.

A lot of kids can and do learn to read using these types of context clues. That's why these methods were developed in the first place. But the problem was, the kids who could learn like this were natural readers and what they were able to do could not be extrapolated to others.

Making mistakes as a parent (losing temper, being selfish/unfair, mild benign neglect) is actually formatively necessary to the development of a child's psyche, and the more we try to perfect parenting, we are removing experiences children must have to be functional adults

as someone who spends quite a bit of time with at-risk teenagers i need you to listen to me because this is 100% serious: take away your kids’ phones and throw them in the fucking TRASH

lots of people dissing homeschooling on X today, but I recall my much younger siblings bringing home word searches in every subject pretty much daily

teaching degrees might be more justifiable if education departments were not liable to fall for every pop psychology scam that crosses their path.

after spending a year as a teacher, I am now convinced that the last ~50 years of education research was flat out wrong. like, "sun revolves around the earth" levels of wrong. time to drop the epicycles and return to empiricism in education

My son let me read his senior thesis (after it had been graded) to graduate from an acclaimed college. In the very first line he wrote "Barrack Obama". The rest of the thesis was well done, but it was a glaring and inexcusable error. His teacher gave him a 4.0.😯
