Excited to share Chris's Flatiron CCA Dynamics School paper showing that Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will be able to detect gaps in thin stellar streams out to 2-3 Mpc. This allows for statistical analyses of gaps, which can help constrain dark matter models. Link: arxiv.org/pdf/2305.12045…

Poor effort: My department is hiring, please apply! Good effort: My department is hiring - DM me to find out which warring faction is currently ascendant, so cover letters can be tailored accordingly.

Astro1982 is released in the wake of 13% inflation; huge cost and schedule slip for Hubble; Reagan in ’84 upends NASA priorities toward Space Station Freedom; OMB proposes canceling AXAF; Challenger tragedy in 1986 fundamentally changes the agency and grounds the shuttle program

A quick reminder to all NAM participants tomorrow - any "more a comment than a question"s must be given in Welsh. It's in the code of conduct

academic conferences are wild. $1000 in flights and lodging. talk about your work for 15mins. hear some questions that are more of comments. go to the plenary. a senior scholar says something completely out of pocket. "this is not who we are." overpriced cocktails at hotel bar.

TWO papers on the arXiv today! In the first, Gandhali Joshi asks whether the number of bright satellites around a galaxy tells us about its recent merger history – and yes, it does, but only for about 4 Gyr after the merger. arxiv.org/abs/2307.02206 (1/2) (funded by European Research Council (ERC))

Playing around with ONS' data on prices and this is something I hadn't realised before. The variation in the price of a pint across England has increased *massively* in the last decade or so.

I think Spiderverse and EEAAO's success demonstrates why MCU and other multiverse stories aren't working. Two ways to go about a multiverse story: 1) "Look at all the different worlds out there" 2) "Look at all the different *yous* out there" Here's why option 2 works. (1/x)
