I am sorry to be stepping down as Minister for Media and Data and saying goodbye to a great team of ministers and officials. It has been a privilege to play a part in shaping the future of UK public service broadcasting and in reforming our data laws using our new Brexit freedom

Thanks to Andrea Coscelli for his nine years of service at the Competition & Markets Authority, not least on its world leading digital markets unit. @beisgovuk now has to hire and recommend a new CEO and Chairman for this important regulator for approval by @CommonsBEIS.

As Chair of Lords Communications and Digital Committee, this week I wrote to DCMS Minister Chris Philp MP & CEO Competition & Markets Authority after they appeared before Committee to update us on digital competition issues – which featured in our recent inquiries on Freedom of Speech Online and the Future of Journalism. 🧵1/4

My letter to Chris Philp MP reinforced the Committee’s concerns about delays to the UK implementing its new pro-competition regime and urged swift action on legislation and the recruitment process for the Competition & Markets Authority chair. 2/4

Facebook have just told us we can't run this cover as an advert (as we normally do for our covers). Is it really too mean? We could change it, have him hold up six fingers, then try again...

We've appealed to Facebook - saying we're a political mag, all of our covers are political. Appeal rejected. It seems satire directed at Biden is rejected by Facebook (or its bots) but when we mocked Trump, Boris, Truss etc that was all fine and fair comment. Funny old world.

PS for those asking, this is how FB rejected our appeal. The “ad” (ie our cover teasing Biden) didn’t “comply with advertising policies”. Doesn’t say why not. Nothing about wrong person posting, etc. We run Spectator covers all the time as FB ads, usually mocking politicians...

I'm going to leave the politics to others. The tax part of the Zahawi story, and therefore my role, feels over. But I wanted to sign off by correcting three takes which we’re going to hear a lot of, and I think are wrong. taxpolicy.org.uk/2023/01/29/thr…

I would have included getting the (very) long awaited Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer Bill to its first reading this week. It will be truly transformative for creating a more competitive and equitable digital economy that works for all
