Excited to teach Colonial Latin America next Fall! My institution lists it as an upper-level History course.

Should I use textbook? Articles? Only primary sources? Suggestions and lessons learned are more than welcome.

'The State of Israel was founded in antiquity.' served as a trick Truth or False prompt in one of my World History exams.

Except it's not a trick question: the Biblical kingdom of Israel ≠ the current State of Israel. This historical fact was even in their traditional textbook.

Academics will always play catch-up with the discourses and practices advanced politically and collectively by social movements.

History shows, over and over, that when police are deployed upon a nonviolent movement the movement swells because even moderates find the violence of police egregious.

I’m unsurprised, then, that the Columbia University student movement has *swelled* since recent mass arrests.

Sharing this gem again since academia loves to “decolonize” everything besides concrete things. Decolonization has become a metaphor signifying everything besides material change and collective resistance. Students at Columbia are showing us that another university is possible.

Since we’re always focusing on pro-Palestine professors and students who have been suspended or fired, I decided to create this thread of everyone who has been negatively affected for being pro-Israel. đŸ§” 1/10

What has gone wrong is that the UK is in active denial that COVID is not over, and is causing long-term mass sickness.

It's clear over the last couple of years some folks think college/university ed is supposed to be trade/tech school (nothing wrong with trade/tech schools) or elementary school for grown ups, instead of encouraging intellectual curiousity, development, and real world application

Every time people use “the grown ups” they’re talking about the people using calm voices to uphold systems of oppression.

1/ World Health Organization (WHO) has published a report on updated terminology for disease transmission

I've seen some debate about it. My take:

- Terminology itself is ok. Big progress
- But no recommendations of how to protect!

Columbia University made a huge mistake calling the cops on student protesters. It has transformed the activism of hundreds of students into a student movement of thousands with millions around the world watching. Thank you Minouche Shafik!

Oh look at that it’s neoliberals and fascists both attacking higher education. If it’s not destruction by austerity it’s destruction by state violence. Seems like maybe it’s time for more faculty to get militant in defense of our students and our profession.

While Columbia University’s president testifies before Congress about alleged antisemitism on college campuses, professors Nara Milanich & Rebecca Jordan Young say the hearing is weaponizing anti-semitism to suppress free speech in an “intensifying attack on liberal education.”
