I’ve just finished reading Jonathan Haidt’s bestselling new book THE ANXIOUS GENERATION. I think it may be the most important nonfiction book of the decade, and today I want to tell you why. 🧵

We know what happens. Administrators forget. They forget the daily challenges & stresses teachers face. Perhaps it’s been some time. Perhaps you were never even a teacher. That’s why EVERY admin should teach at least one class while they are a principal, superintendent, etc.

We cannot think of schools as the solution for every challenge students face. That’s one of the big reasons teachers are in this mess to begin with.

Just because some teachers would rather stay in the classroom than go into administration doesn’t mean they aren’t leaders. Many have amazing talents which can benefit the whole school. Good leaders recognize and value them as experts.

U.S. professors - as you update your syllabi for fall, consider leaving November 5 open. Need to reduce as many barriers to voting as we can!

Dear Office Depot: It would be awesome if I could just buy the dang composition notebooks without having to sneak around like a criminal, buying 12 at a time. I need 100 every year and every year it’s a thing. I’m a teacher. I’m not selling them on the black market 😭

There isn’t a ‘real’ teacher shortage. There's a shortage of willingness to invest the profession with respect and support. There's a shortage of willingness to make the jobs appealing enough to attract and retain all the people schools want to attract and retain.

Did you know we spend over $8 Billion a year on teacher turnover? Common sense should tell us that If we spent that money on teacher retention, we wouldn't have to spend it on teacher attrition.

I’d like to hear more principals replace, “She needs to work on her behavior management” with “I need to support her better so she can spend less time managing behavior and more time teaching.”

One cause of grade inflation: If a student who *can’t even read* is given an A for the semester, it will go unnoticed. There will be no repercussions for a teacher. If that same student is given an F, you will have to justify it, potentially even be pressured to change it.
