Our new paper in Biodiversity & Conservation examines understory algal assemblages in kelp forests along >1000 km of UK coastline. These assemblages are rich and abundant, and important as food source and habitat….. rdcu.be/b8RDN

Heatwaves have been increasing in frequency, severity, and duration over the last 50 years. It is therefore important to investigate the effects of heatwaves on valuable ecosystems such as intertidal forests, which have very high levels of primary productivity. MBA Ecology Group

We're diversifying from kelp! How do Seagrass respond to marine heatwaves? & functional traits of red seaweeds -like this beautiful Stalked Leafbearer- relate to habitat provision value?

Well that's it for our 2023 Rapid Assessment Surveys of NNS in marinas and ports around England and Wales. Already some very interesting finds, although we still have rather a lot of sample pots to examine 🔬! Natural England Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru | Natural Resources Wales MBA Ecology Group Hope to do SW next year.

Wembury Church Reef - a classic historic site from #MBAlegend Mary Parke, who started a long-term study here in 1941!⏳ I used archived data from MBA Library and incorporate this site into my #historicalSWkelps survey😃 Fun today with Alix, Mariko, Sophie and visiting🦞#fieldwork

Our new piece in nature warns of likely marine heatwave intensification under the current/developing El Nino. Clear & urgent need to plan, monitor, manage and adapt to extreme ocean temperatures to reduce ecological and socioeconomic impacts.. nature.com/articles/d4158…

Our amazing & long-standing engineer Kevin Atkins is leaving today! Kev has been pivotal in keeping our aquarium running for decades & in true form has been working up to the wire building a new experimental system. Kev will be greatly missed and we wish him a happy retirement!

Great to see this paper out! Amazing hard work and perseverance from Nora Salland to benchmark population structure of this likely climate change winner in our coastal habitats. 🌊🌱🌞🤿📉😁 MBA - Marine Biological Association MBA Ecology Group The British Phycological Society

I had a wonderful time as ever at the The British Phycological Society conference in Reading. Maxine gave an amazing talk and we were both so honoured for the prizes! Thank you so much to the organisers and committee for a great few days Hannah Thomas 🌱💧🌊🦠

A chilly 4 deg C on the rocky shore today, but great to complete some winter surveys for the BEF-Scale project... investigating resilience of Fucus habitats across a large temp/latitude gradient. 🥶🥶🥶🥶🌊🌊🌊🌊🦐🦐🦐🦐🌱🌱🌱🌱
