🐟NEW PAPER!🐟
Our results from camera & fishing surveys in UK seaweed & mussel farms suggest they could create new feeding grounds for fish of commercial & ecological importance🏡🌱🦪👩‍🌾

Great article on the extremely high temperatures being recorded across the global ocean. Human induced climate change main driver but other factors important.

Despite pretty awful sea state and visibility, was great to get the 2024 MBA scientific diving season up and running with some training/refresher dives. Superb support from Tritonia and RV MBA Sepia as always. Now we just need some settled weather and decent viz 🌞🦐🌱🌊🤞🤞🤞

The State of the Global Climate report for 2023 is now out (wmo.int) which shows that the global ocean experienced an average daily MHW coverage of 32%, well above the previous record of 23% recorded in 2016.

... will likely have major implications for coral/seaweed habitats, biodiversity, fisheries and other ecosystem services. Coastal habitats already impacted by long term ocean warming (eg see royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10.10… )

Sea temps across much of the global ocean are alarmingly high, with extensive MHW activity. However, coastal waters off Japan have been in a near-permanent MHW state for ~1 year. The current winter MHW is remarkable, with max intensity of >11 degC !!!

If you don't find this concerning, you really don't understand how bad things are getting. Yes, there's an El Niño at the moment, but the sea surface temperature anomaly has never been so extreme during previous El Niños.

So much heat kicking about the mid/northeast Atlantic Ocean already, with large marine heatwave developing along W Africa and W Europe. Overall average temp in N Atlantic highest on record for this time of year.

Interesting example of a conservation strategy aimed at reducing impacts of extreme sea temps associated with a developing marine heatwave. More adaptation/ management approaches will be needed as MHWs intensify!

Delighted to share our paper describing structure and diversity of holdfast/understorey assemblages associated with kelp Eisenia cokeri in Peru. High species richness and vital habitat forming species. Great collab between 🇵🇪 & 🇨🇱 & 🇬🇧 link.springer.com/article/10.100…
