Should SSRIs be available over the counter?

Having seen many patients become manic on them, or develop side effects, or have great difficulty discontinuing them, it seems dangerous to me.

What do you think?

Self-diagnosis “may lead to misdiagnosis and misdirect the person from care that could help them; and also, it may alter the social meaning and standing of a diagnosis, disadvantaging those most affected and who need it the most”. cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Another important study. The are alternative (or adjunct) treatments to drugs and psychotherapy. We need to be open-minded towards unconventional treatments as long as they have a solid evidence base!

This is a very good example of a sober, neutral and non-judgmental assessment of scientific disagreement. Thank you Nicholas, I wishes we could always discuss disagreement in this way 🙏🏼

For those who claim we are stigmatising them by saying that people with depression have broken brains – we are ofc saying the exact opposite that it does not take an abnormal brain to be depressed bit.ly/3IbeI2x – you can do it just fine with a normal one!(1/6)

Venlafaxine withdrawal caused acute suicidality. A case report authored by Milutin Kostić Michael P. Hengartner, PhD Jelena Buzejic and me. Causality is not guaranteed but plausible, based on a challenge-dechallenge-rechallenge principle and other things.

Largest systematic review and meta-analysis finds there is no long term data on the effectiveness of tricyclic antidepressants, small short term benefits, increase in serious adverse effects, not enough info on whether they affect suicidality bit.ly/3HrFqUj

Super happy to highlight this study on behalf of Lisa Cosgrove who is unfortunately not on social media. This is important -and disturbing- for the field of psychiatry.

New study again fails to identify biomarkers in depression:

„Although multivariate neuroimaging markers increase predictive power compared with univariate analyses, no depression biomarker could be uncovered that is able to identify individual patients“
