It was great to record a new locality for the #lichen Physcia tribacioides, in the Beckland Valley (#NationalTrust). This species is red-listed as IUCN Vulnerable and Schedule 8 (WCA). Recorded as part of the Finding Nature’s Footprint project. Good work team! #Devon

Today is UK Fungus Day - a celebration of the wonderful world of #fungi (British Mycological Society)! Lichens are special types of fungi, that partner up with algae and/or cyanobacteria! With over 2000 species in Britain & Ireland - today, is a celebration for lichens too #ukfungusday

Hunting for treasure! A scattering of purple jewels on the #woodland floor at Glenarm (N. #Ireland). Here is the amethyst deceiver (Laccaria amethystina). This fungus has mastered the art of deception, where it can change colour in its wet / dry state! #fungi #fantasticfungi

It’s always an absolute delight to deliver events / training for the Saving Devon’s Treescapes project (#Devon Wildlife Trust). Two sessions delivered at the end of September, in Phaer Park (#Exmouth). Give the project a follow: youtu.be/okjTHrJA72w?si…

Crinan Wood is an exceptional example of Scottish #Rainforest. Pure stands of hazel prove really important for a suite of crustose #lichens, seen here forming mosaics on the bark. These include Crutarndina petractoides (a barnacle lichen) & Arthonia ilicina (a star lichen).

Absolutely delighted to have found a new locality for the golden-eye #lichen (Teloschistes chrysopthalmus), at Pennare, #Cornwall. This is now the sixth site in VC 1. Such a stunner! Work for Woodfield Ecology.

Was brilliant to see Lydford Gorge (#Dartmoor) & it’s lichens get a shoutout on #BBC Breakfast TV on Saturday. This site is phenomenal and hugely important for its #lichens & #bryophytes. I was lucky enough to survey this site last year. Thank you Helen Briggs! #Devon

It was great to give a presentation on Atlantic #woodlands & associated management for #lichens last month, on behalf of the Institute of Chartered Foresters (Institute of Chartered Foresters). Nearly an hour waxing lyrical about how wonderful lichens are on #Dartmoor.

Pseudocyphellaria intricata is one of the specklebelly #lichens and in England, it is only known from Seathwaite (Borrowdale, #LakeDistrict). It is a wonderful species, confined to high quality #rainforest sites in hyperoceanic areas. #Cumbria

“The reason I love this site, is because it emphasises the conservation importance of #trees outside of #woodlands”. A short peice I pulled together on Lobaria pulmonaria on Dartmoor. Full video: youtu.be/88CCO1iSK80?si…

Tucked away in the Dart Valley (where the Webburn meets the Dart) is a spectacular example of high growth #forest, where two oaks support Fuscopannaria sampaiana. These are the only two trees in England, where the main population resides in western Scotland. #lichens #Dartmoor

Aurora borealis (Northern Lights) dancing around the sky at Woodbury Common, #Devon. What a spectacle she was! Painting the sky every colour of the rainbow, only to increase in intensity throught the night! Go and catch her if you can! #NorthernLights #auroraborealis #exmouth

Great to host friend & colleague Jesse Miller (Jesse Miller @texosporium.bsky.social), exploring one of #Dartmoor’s finest temperate rainforests. Jesse lives in the Pacific North West (America) and is President of California Lichens, so was fascinating to explore similarities and differences within this biome.

An absolute honour & privilege to attend the Borrowdale #Rainforest NNR (#LakeDistrict) launch event today. Felt a little emotional! I have spent a huge amount of time working in this valley, so am delighted for this national designation. itv.com/news/border/20…

So wonderful to have attended the temperate rainforest conference in #Plymouth last week. An overly inspiring day! This was followed by exploring the #lichens in some of our top rainforests in #Devon, led by myself & the British Lichen Society.

A fabulous weekend in #Snowdonia for the Field Studies Council & Manchester Met. University #lichen course. A great bunch, with three days looking at lichens in all sort of habitats, from upland rocks to temperate rainforests & everything in between! #lichens #wales
