I think I could never find an author who gives me as much pleasure as Thomas Hardy. The descriptions and dialogue and exquisite humour. Current obsession is Under the Greenwood Tree, as I alternate between the book and the 2006 film with Keeley Hawes and James Murray. Heaven.

There's something I don't get. If water companies are fined huge sums how does that help? Would it not be better to give a timescale in which they must show what they are doing to improve? Or else? Threat of jail for wilful negligence?
