A 🧵 on unintended consequences of mental health interventions, and why some school and workplace schemes may be contributing to the problem they were designed to solve. 1/10

Delighted to share four new evaluations we are funding at Youth Endowment Fund to find what works to keep our children safe. All provide children with adults they can trust. First one: Spark2life 👇youtu.be/LN4JM_7GW1M

It's well known that lower income people tend to suffer much worse health. Is poverty at the heart of this disparity, and, if so, could a large cash transfer help close this gap? We examine an RCT that provided 1000 low income participants $1000/month for 3 years. We find…

We are happy to release the first results of a RCT of a US program that provided $1,000/month unconditionally for 3 years to 1,000 individuals in the treatment group, with a group of 2,000 people receiving $50/month serving as the control. These are sizable transfers. 1/ 🧵

We must do what works: that means more mentoring, therapy, hotspots policing and focussed deterrence. It means less knife education programmes, awareness campaigns and knife bins. [All evidence here: youthendowmentfund.org.uk/toolkit/] (8/10)

NEW STOP AND SEARCH RESEARCH If we want to halve knife crime, we need to talk less about stop and search. A 🧵on what the largest research project on stop and search tells us. (1/17)

Today, on behalf of Youth Endowment Fund I joined a roundtable with bereaved parents, PM, Home Secretary, Lord Chancellor, Idris Elba and others to underscore the governments commitment to halving knife crime. Much to do but genuinely encouraging to see the seriousness from PM down.

I am SO excited about this innovation: a randomised control trial testing what happens when prison staffing and regime is focused on rehabilitation. Visiting this place to see what is possible in a system where change can feel impossible is mind-blowing! thetimes.com/article/61676a…

"We must look beyond the blade... It is urgent that we find more ways to show young people that their lives have value, before it is too late."

I’m thrilled to announce that in the next academic year Get Further will partner with the EEF and University of Warwick to deliver a landmark Randomised Control Trial evaluating the effectiveness of our Resits Tuition Programme in further education. 1/4

TIMSS 2023 is out! And England has done well. Year 5 maths scores have held despite the pandemic, and Year 9 scores have increased by quite some way. Teachers across the country should be feeling proud! Details in the 🧵...

Careful evaluation by my colleagues Institute for Fiscal Studies shows EMA was not effective in improving outcomes. Looks like due to reduced work experience among 17/18 year olds. Big contrast with our evaluation of Sure Start which showed significant positive long term effects.

Obviously views differ on what is driving the increase in children entitled to EHCPs and/or disability benefits - but: it is happening, the scale is remarkable, and it has huge implications for the country

For the past year, we at |= Eedi have been working with Google to investigate the role AI can play in supporting one-to-one tutoring. Today, the report has been released. Read the report here: storage.googleapis.com/deepmind-media… And our write-up here: eedi.com/news/new-explo…

This is a great piece of exploratory research. Suggests that in this context (secondary school maths) AI tutoring can be as good as - or possibly even better than - online tuition from a human

A lot of entrance exams consist of non-verbal reasoning questions - shape rotation, etc. The argument in favour of them is that they are "tutor-proof". But whether they are or not - kids are practising them with their tutors anyway! Is that a good use of their time?

New Post! In many classrooms, lots of students aren’t listening, which means they aren’t learning. In this post we outline a few common mistakes and simple techniques for building classrooms where ALL students expected to participate. Please share if you can, link in reply 🙏
